While investigating a man claiming to be the long-lost heir to a noble family, Veronica Speedwell gets the surprise of her life in this new adventure from the New York Times bestselling and Edgar Award–nominated author Deanna Raybourn.London, 1889. Veronica Speedwell and her natural historian beau Stoker are summoned by Sir Hugo Montgomerie, head of Special Branch. He has a personal request on behalf of his goddaughter, Euphemia Hathaway. After years of traveling the world, her eldest brother, Jonathan, heir to Hathaway Hall, was believed to have been killed in the catastrophic eruption of Krakatoa a few years before. But now a man matching Jonathan’s description and carrying his possessions has arrived at Hathaway Hall with no memory of his identity or where he has been. Could this man truly be Jonathan, back from the dead? Or is he a devious impostor, determined to gain ownership over the family’s most valuable possessions—a legendary parure of priceless Rajasthani jewels? It’s a delicate situation, and Veronica is Sir Hugo’s only hope. Veronica and Stoker agree to go to Hathaway Hall to covertly investigate the mysterious amnesiac. Veronica is soon shocked to find herself face-to-face with a ghost from her past. To help Sir Hugo discover the truth, she must open doors to her own history that she long believed to be shut for good.

Another great mystery for Veronica and Stoker. This one involves an impostor that the Inspector wishes investigated. The team agrees to do this under the cover of the Rosemount museum. We also learn more of Veronica’s past, a part that she has kept hidden from Stoker. We meet a very interesting cast of characters, some unhappy, some ridiculous, and some who are not who they seem. There is, of course, danger and kidnapping. And a cheese slicer as garrote. Typical Speedwell and a joy to read.
This was another exciting story. I read it in two days.Veronica and Stoker are the most exciting characters and I am looking forward to book 8.

I have read every book in this wonderful series…and listened to them as well. I have thoroughly enjoyed each book…except this one. In fact, I want a refund. Veronica is simply unrecognizable as she makesconstant illogical excuses for the “imposter”. In every book she has stuck to her guns…but now..she melts. Stoker is once again beat, sliced, tortured..all to keep her safe and Veronica stillhangs on to her “emotional independence”. Stoker gives her everything…and she gives him nothing. Readers that enjoy one sided relationships will enjoy this book.
As usual-an absolute delight to be reunited with Veronica, Stoker, and the antics and shenanigans they get themselves into! This particular “case” has a lot of majorly captivating surprises, with unexpected twists and turns. Plenty to keep the reader hooked, and not wanting to stop. Definitely one of those you lose sleep over, and don’t complete quite so many household chores as you probably should’ve.As what has come to be expected, Raybourn always ends each novel with enough suspenseful intrigue to let you know she plans on another release. This one though, excels above and beyond suspensefully intriguing, surpassing all previous books, launching it to the next pinnacle of beguiling trickery to make you want to know the release date of this next installment ASAP!!Highly recommend!
