“A Ursula Le Guin-like grace… Ten out of 10.” —New York TimesIn Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Elder Race, a junior anthropologist on a distant planet must help the locals he has sworn to study to save a planet from an unbeatable foe.Lynesse is the lowly Fourth Daughter of the queen, and always getting in the way. But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she’s an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). Although she still gets in the way, she understands that the only way to save her people is to invoke the pact between her family and the Elder sorcerer who has inhabited the local tower for as long as her people have lived here (though none in living memory has approached it). But Elder Nyr isn’t a sorcerer, and he is forbidden to help, and his knowledge of science tells him the threat cannot possibly be a demon…At the Publisher’s request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
This short novel consists of a story that is really there to contrast the two characters. The “sorcerer” is a classic sci-fi character: intellectual, always describing the world in rational, materialistic ways. The “heroine” is a fantasy trope, interpreting everything in turns of magic and good and evil and derring-do. The collision is often hilarious…in particular where the sorcerer tries to explain something they think the heroine will never understand, only to be told “Of course that’s exactly how it is”. The characters are better developed than their stereotype requires, each with considerable insecurity and issues that make them very human. A brilliantly crafted little gem. If anything the climax is unnecessary as the whole plot if just a macguffin for these two and their relationship.
Light on science more of a fantasy novel. The author likes his ‘lost generation’ trope. Do I sense Akira here?
Hard to imagine but I think this author is under appreciated. Another absolutely remarkable story that continues to cement this author as one of the finest science fiction writers living.
I normally don’t write reviews of books, but I felt I had to make an exception. I’ve read a few of the authors books and enjoyed them immensely. When I saw how relatively short this novel was and how it jumped into the story with very little prelude, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Suffice to say I finished the book in one afternoon and enjoyed it immensely! A very interesting premise, very interesting characters, and top notch writing! A VERY ENJOYABLE READ!!
Terrific exploration of the old trope that science you don’t understand is like magic. I think this story might appeal to young adults and old adults. Beautifully written with a great plot. Recommended highly
This was a refreshing change from some formulaic efforts among my recent reads. An exploration of the human spirit, worth spending some time with.
