Summary

1942, Germany: A Nazi fortune. A Jewish girl hiding in plain sight. An impossible choice…When the Nazis destroyed all that Margarete Rosenbaum knew, taking everything and everyone she treasured, she prayed only to survive. Until chance allowed her to disguise herself as Annegret Huber, the daughter of a prominent Nazi.As Annegret, Margarete had a moment of safety, but now the legacy of her false identity means she must make a devastating decision, and risk everything to save the lives of others.Because the true Annegret and her family are dead, and the fortune is all hers – all Margarete’s. There is a grand house with crystal chandeliers, and a factory with fences built high and topped with cruel curls of barbed wire. Inside, the workers shiver, their faces gaunt from hunger. Margarete struggles to hide her gasp when—amongst the faces of the prisoners—she sees one that is achingly familiar.Suddenly, she has hundreds of lives in her hands, including one who means more to her than anyone else left in the world. There’s no question that she must act. From that moment, Margarete is more than just a girl in hiding. She’s a girl who can save others. But in her new position of power, surrounded by the Nazi elite, every move she makes is being watched. Every mistake she makes could lead to disaster. As the war tears through the country she loves, and turns the world dark, Margarete knows she can’t ignore her chance to stand up against evil. Even if it means risking her own life to save the innocents in her protection…An absolutely gripping and devastating story about courage and sacrifice in the darkest days of war. Perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, All the Light We Cannot See, and The Nightingale.Readers are loving From the Dark We Rise:“Wow… so amazingly captivating. I enjoyed this second book about a woman who assumes another’s identity and uses it to not only protect herself, but help others. Excellent characters. A great read.
I appreciated Ms. Kummerow’s attention to detail and her talent of entertwining history, the reality of war, and her development of the main character. This will keep me asking for more.
What an amazing story of true grit and determination. The heroine is the finest embodiment of loyalty and encouragement to her fellow man.
I tired quickly of the use of both names throughout the book; I feel explaining it in the beginning then just using one or the other after would have been less tedious. Personally I didn’t like the foul language, some might say it wasn’t the worst but any is the worst. I know women were treated terrible but the depth of details regarding sex was a bit much as well. I knew what was going to happen to Lena, just not to the degree of evil; I didn’t understand at all why they didn’t bring her back into the safety of the house after the S.S. left and the house was fumigated. I had hoped for more information about the area and the resistance in this area if there were any, I feel there were but it wasn’t addressed in this book. I enjoy story, even some romance but also hope for facts and WWII History. I also appreciate dates at chapter markers so we are kept in story balance.

A continuation of Margarete’s story from A Light in the Window as she now lives the role of wealthy Annegret Huber, whose late father was a Nazi. The real Annegret was a spoiled child and Margarete has to find the right balance of adult Annegret who had survived the loss of her entire family, with the memories the servants have of her as a spoiled brat. Residing on the Huber country estate, a few hours north of Berlin, should have made this somewhat easier, but revelations of a camp near the estate, helping an escapee, and dealing with several SS officers staying at the estate for a few days combine for a nerve wracking story that is difficult to stop reading…..At the beginning of each chapter I wondered if this would be the one where Margarete was exposed by someone who could not be trusted. Highly recommend this series, and can hardly wait for third book in this series.
