I Was Better Last Night By Harvey Fierstein
Book/Novel Author: Harvey Fierstein
Book/Novel Title: I Was Better Last Night
NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • A poignant and hilarious memoir from the cultural icon, gay rights activist, and four-time Tony Award–winning actor and playwright, revealing never-before-told stories of his personal struggles and conflict, of sex and romance, and of his fabled careerHarvey Fierstein’s legendary career has transported him from community theater in Brooklyn, to the lights of Broadway, to the absurd excesses of Hollywood and back. He’s received accolades and awards for acting in and/or writing an incredible string of hit plays, films, and TV shows: Hairspray, Fiddler on the Roof, Mrs. Doubtfire, Independence Day, Cheers, La Cage Aux Folles, Torch Song Trilogy, Newsies, and Kinky Boots. While he has never shied away from the spotlight, Mr. Fierstein says that even those closest to him have never heard most of the tales—of personal struggles and conflict, of sex and romance, of his fabled career—revealed in these wildly entertaining pages. I Was Better Last Night bares the inner life of this eccentric nonconforming child from his roots in 1952 Brooklyn, to the experimental worlds of Andy Warhol and the Theatre of the Ridiculous, to the gay rights movements of the seventies and the tumultuous AIDS crisis of the eighties, through decades of addiction, despair, and ultimate triumph. Mr. Fierstein’s candid recollections provide a rich window into downtown New York City life, gay culture, and the evolution of theater (of which he has been a defining figure), as well as a moving account of his family’s journey of acceptance. I Was Better Last Night is filled with wisdom gained, mistakes made, and stories that come together to describe an astonishingly colorful and meaningful life. Lucky for us all, his unique and recognizable voice is as engaging, outrageously funny, and vulnerable on the page.
So enjoyed this book even though I am unfamiliar with New York theater, having grown up on the left coast. Lucky are those who were able to live and experience the theater world this book so deliciously describes and recounts. The good, the bad, the ugly but ultimately the magical world the author has lived in and the times and history he survived. I couldn’t put it down.
A beautifully written remembrance of his life. For theater enthusiasts like myself (I am Harvey Fierstein‘s age) he brought back countless memories of shows I’d seen and events I had witnessed and been a part of. An absolute must read for any true Broadway enthusiast.
If you need a soul-cleansing cry. This is your book. If you need to learn or relearn about queer culture and movement. This is your book. If you want to laugh. This is your book. Thank you Harvey. You’ve got a brand new fan. This is my book.
They broke the mold when Harvey Feirstein came upon the scene. He’s unique, a brilliant theatrical treasure….and that voice! As I read, it was as if we were sitting together and he was both regaling me with backstage gossip and simultaneously pouring out his heart to include the enormous joys as well as the immense sorrows of his life. His voice resonated. I read a lot of autobiographies, biographies, and memoirs, and this one is right up with the best of them.
Thank you to Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group and NetGalley for an ARC of this book.I am a huge Broadway fan, so when I saw this book I knew I wanted to read it. Harvey tells the story of his life, starting at his childhood and up to present day. He talks about all of his work on Broadway , and also about being a member of the LGBTQ+ community.I really found this book a fascinating read and I really enjoyed it. I would love to listen to it as an Audiobook, and hear it in Harvey’s voice
