NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK“There’s a 100% chance you’ll be paging through this book to uncover the secrets and deception that could potentially burn everything down!” — Reese Witherspoon“This is by far one of the most endearing L.A. novels in recent memory.”— Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)”A capacious book, chock-full of human drama…Escandón’s narrative voice is often witty and warm, and her meditations on Los Angeles are lush and lyrical…A lively and ambitious family novel.” — New York Times Book ReviewStorm clouds are on the horizon in L.A. Weather, a fun, fast-paced novel of a Mexican-American family from the author of the #1 Los Angeles Times bestseller Esperanza’s Box of SaintsL.A. is parched, dry as a bone, and all Oscar, the weather-obsessed patriarch of the Alvarado family, desperately wants is a little rain. He’s harboring a costly secret that distracts him from everything else. His wife, Keila, desperate for a life with a little more intimacy and a little less Weather Channel, feels she has no choice but to end their marriage. Their three daughters—Claudia, a television chef with a hard-hearted attitude; Olivia, a successful architect who suffers from gentrification guilt; and Patricia, a social media wizard who has an uncanny knack for connecting with audiences but not with her lovers—are blindsided and left questioning everything they know. Each will have to take a critical look at her own relationships and make some tough decisions along the way. With quick wit and humor, Maria Amparo Escandón follows the Alvarado family as they wrestle with impending evacuations, secrets, deception, and betrayal, and their toughest decision yet: whether to stick together or burn it all down.Read more
I loved everything about this book, and found its theme of the endurance of family love very appealing and welcome. I think some of my fellows readers missed the point. Pick up this very warm and engaging book and join the Alvarados through a year of changing weather, metaphorical and real.

L.A Weather was a very good surprise. Here we follow Oscar and Keila Alvarado, who live in a big house in California. The Alvarados seem to live comfortably. They have three grown daughters, Claudia Olivia and Patricia, who all have successful careers. But they do not take well when Keila announces she wants to divorce their father.Oscar and Keila have grown apart as Oscar seems to keep a secret from the rest of the family. He becomes withdrawn and hopeless, also inexplicably obsessed with the weather. There is a lot going on with this family: cleptomania, near drowning experience of young children, disease, religion, infidelity, three divorces, infertility, surrogacy, embryo theft, wild fire evacuations, commentary on climate change and immigration. This family was like any other messy family. I loved reading about all the dramas and obstacles they went through. I would love to see this book adapted for TV or film. I can see it being a telenovela. I will definitely recommend L.A Weather.
If you think weather in Los Angeles (sunny and warm) is boring, you have not been paying attention. To remedy that, consider reading Maria Amparo Escandón’s novel titled, L.A. Weather. We meet the Alvarado family as aspects of their life seem to be out of control. Peril is at hand for reasons known and kept secret. Renewal is required but brings risks. Readers will enjoy spending time with this fascinating extended family as they navigate the storms of life together and apart.Rating: Four-star (I like it)
This book is simply not written well. It’s sophomoric. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone. I only chose it because it was a Reese Witherspoon pick.
Really liked the story but the lengthy descriptions of wedding dances, lists of food, etc. got to be too much
