With its island gothic sensibility, sexy suspense, and spine-tingling reimagining of an Agatha Christie classic, Reckless Girls will wreck you.
I almost didn’t get this book because I had read a previous Rachel Hawkins novel (The Ex Hex) and it was just ok, I couldn’t really get into it. I’m so so glad that I ended up picking this book for my BOTM in January. I just got around to reading it these past couple days and HOLY SMOKES!!!! There’s just so much more to this book than I thought there would be. The Adventures, the friendships, the twist, the partying, the setting… ALL OF IT!! If you’re looking for a easy read that’s pretty exciting and fun with bits of OMG!!!! Just get it you won’t be disappointed!!
[Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press for my gifted e-ARC copy, in exchange for a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.] This is my second Rachel Hawkins novel (the first being under her other pen, The Ex Hex), and I think they have a similar energy. They have a fun, easy to read premise, but aren’t groundbreaking or my favorite reads at the end of the day. Do I recommend reading Reckless Girls? Yes, but with a disclaimer: the pacing is slower than you’d anticipate from most “thrillers”. The story has all of the juicy ingredients you could want: an abandoned island with a creepy history, mysterious new friends with wealth, a huge cash payment that could change the course of your life, and oh – of course, murder. The story begins set in a “paradise” feel and things slowly turn sour, and I do mean slowly. I wish the pacing was quicker throughout, and more time spent on the ending scenes, but I did enjoy the book overall. 3/5 stars.
This is a perfect escape novel. Liked how the story was framed with before and now. Some parts a little bit of a stretch but hey its a thriller. Nice little twist at the end that I didn’t see coming kept me up until midnight to finish
Quick, unique vacation read. Some nice twists and turns but I was left with many questions and some gaping plot holes. A fun read.

Synopsis: Lux McAllister, and her boyfriend, Nico, are working in Hawaii but dream of sailing away in his boat to other islands. Their dream is finally realized when they are hired by Amma and Brittany to take them to the remote Meroe Island. Meroe Island has a tragic history and people have died while on the island. When Lux, Nico and the girls land on the island, they discover they aren’t alone. Already arrived are Jake and Eliza, a couple from Australia who have their own history. As the characters stories are revealed, they realize not everything is as it seems and in order to leave the island, they will have to discover their true selves. What I liked: This book was a lot of fun! It kept me guessing from the very beginning. It was like putting together a very intricate puzzle. I was trying to figure out how the island was part of the story, how the details provided about the island fit. I was trying to figure out what was the back story of Amma and Brittany, who these girls really were, how they fit together, their back stories, etc. Then there was Eliza and Jake and how and why they were together and what was really going on with them. What I didn’t like: Some parts of the story were a little slow. There were times they were just hanging out on the beach. And there was so much alcohol and food and I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from because they were on the island for a long time, yet the food and booze was unlimited. Yes, I was also trying to figure out where all the trash was going (guess that’s when the story was going slow for me ). Overall, this book was just so much fun! It would be a great beach read, or a hanging by the pool book. There are twists I didn’t see coming, and I love that in a book.
