Summary

A missing woman. A husband suspected. The truth will . . .TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAYFrom the New York Times bestselling author of Find You First and Elevator Pitch comes a gripping psychological thriller about a formerly missing woman who has suddenly returned under mysterious circumstances. One weekend, while Andrew Mason was on a fishing trip, his wife, Brie, vanished without a trace. Most everyone assumed Andy had got away with murder—it’s always the husband, isn’t it?—but the police could never build a strong case against him. For a while, Andy hit rock bottom—he drank too much to numb the pain, was abandoned by all his friends save one, nearly lost his business, and became a pariah in the place he once called home. Now, six years later, Andy has finally put his life back together. He sold the house he once shared with Brie and moved away. To tell the truth, he wasn’t sad to hear that the old place was razed and a new house built on the site. He’s settled down with a new partner, Jayne, and life is good. But Andy’s peaceful world is about to shatter. One day, a woman shows up at his old address, screaming, “Where’s my house? What’s happened to my house?” And then, just as suddenly as she appeared, the woman—who bears a striking resemblance to Brie—is gone. The police are notified and old questions—and dark suspicions—resurface. Could Brie really be alive after all these years? If so, where has she been? It soon becomes clear that Andy’s future and the lives of those closest to him depend on discovering what the hell is going on. The trick will be whether he can stay alive long enough to unearth the answers.

Three of his most recent books, Find You First (‘21), Elevator Pitch (‘19) and A Noise Downstairs (‘18) all received 4 stars.I always love how even this author’s secondary characters are well developed. The tension stayed throughout the whole book. Entertained me til the end and even that was totally satisfying.I am a little upset that I purchased this book for $14.99 (May 2022) and yesterday I purchased Linwood’s newest novel, Look Both Ways (June 2022) for $9.99. They are both by the same publisher and I don’t understand why one is $5 more. CRAZY PUBLISHER !!!!!
Did you read the synopsis already? I’m assuming you did. Now do your best to forget it before you read the book. I think this one is more fun to step into without knowing anything at all about what’s to come. This story messed with my head! Just when I thought I had it figured out, something new was revealed to make me question my assumptions.I didn’t love any of the characters, and I didn’t even like most of them. While often that’s a problem for me, I didn’t mind it here because they’re all interesting, complicated people.Pacing is consistent through most of the book. This isn’t a fast-paced, action-packed thriller, but more of a sizzling psychological suspense.*I won this book in an Instagram giveaway.*
The author writes well, keeps you invested in the story and his characters. The ending is quite a surprise.
I’m about a third of the way into this book and am giving up! After an interesting beginning, it’s just slow and boring. I’ve read several of Barkeley’s novels before and they were great! This one – meh. I am astounded and more than a little a suspecious at all these five star reviews.

This was a fun “what would you do” story! A woman has been missing for 6 years with no clues or body to be found. Suddenly, she has been seen in multiple locations. You are her husband, her sister, her mother. What would you do? What would you be thinking?I felt like the first half of this book was slow in getting going to the actual action. Once we got there I was fully invested and wanted to now WHAT was going on!! Who? What? Why? Where? How?The author had a number of chapters interspersed where there was dialogue of the police interview with each character in the book. I thought this was a really clever way to better get to know the thought process of each individual and also disseminate a lot of information quickly.I did feel the need to suspend some disbelief by the end of the book as things got a little unrealistic in my mind….but it was an entertaining read.
