The Kaiju Preservation Society is John Scalzi’s first standalone adventure since the conclusion of his New York Times bestselling Interdependency trilogy. When COVID-19 sweeps through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps. That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what he calls “an animal rights organization.” Tom’s team needs a last-minute grunt to handle things on their next field visit. Jamie, eager to do anything, immediately signs on.What Tom doesn’t tell Jamie is that the animals his team cares for are not here on Earth. Not our Earth, at least. In an alternate dimension, massive dinosaur-like creatures named Kaiju roam a warm, human-free world. They’re the universe’s largest and most dangerous panda and they’re in trouble. It’s not just the Kaiju Preservation Society who have found their way to the alternate world. Others have, too. And their carelessness could cause millions back on our Earth to die.At the Publisher’s request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
I really needed this book right now. Snarky humor, smart people being smart, and a fun ride all the way through. If you like any of John Scalzi’s books, you’ll love this one.
Scalzi made no secret of his intention to write a breezy, amusing novel to counter the dread of the covid era. This he has achieved. This book has his typical wit, although to my taste it was slightly overdone, undercutting the tension that led up to the dramatic climax a bit. HIs repartee is fast and furious, such that differentiation among the four main characters suffered a bit. Kudos for introducing a character with alternative pronouns, though. If you’re looking for entertainment without a great deal of gravitas, this might suit the bill. And no, this is not a rewrite of Jurassic Park.
Nuclear-powered Godzillas, interdimensional portals, and lots of digs at the last two years of our lives. What more could one want? A fun and easy popcorn read.
This is one of Scalzi’s best works. It both educates (without being preachy) and wonderfully entertains. I hope John Scalzi revisits the world he creates here somewhere down the line.
This book is easily one of my favorites of the year. Clever, giggle-out-loud funny, full of geeky references (and I mean FULL), with a badass agender main character. I have not yet met a kaiju story I didn’t like, and John Scalzi manages to keep the genre fresh while heavily nodding to previous iterations. This is actually the first book by Scalzi I’ve read, and it made me an instant fan. If you’re looking for heavy, hard, sci fi, this is not it. If you want a fun read with snappy dialogue and giant creatures named Kevin, this book is definitely for you.
So I started reading this book and eventually downloaded the audiobook due to not having enough time as a teacher to keep enjoying reading the book (I’m also a grad student, so I had other readings to do). Anyway, Will Wheaton does an awesome job of narrating this book! Ever since “Pacific Rim” came out (yes, I know it’s the title of a movie, so it needs to be italicized, but I’m on a cell phone keyboard that doesn’t offer that option, so it will be left in quotes), anything with the term “kaiju” is worth checking out. So enjoy this scrumptious book ( I meant that figuratively, not literally)!
