The Splinter By Saul Herzog
Book/Novel Author: Saul Herzog
Book/Novel Title: The Splinter
Prague, Czech RepublicA Russian assassin is activated to kill seemingly unconnected female staffers at the US embassy. What emerges is a plot as complex as it is terrifying. Against a backdrop of escalating Russian invasion preparations, a Romanian kill squad, a Kremlin honeytrap, and a Soviet-era biological weapons victim converge on an unsuspecting city, and an unprotected embassy with deadly intent. The Splinter by Saul Herzog is the stunning fifth instalment in the series that has taken the publishing industry, and Hollywood rights departments, by storm. This dazzling tour de force is a full standalone novel. From the mind of one of the most creative and versatile writers working in America today, this book will surely go down as a classic of the spy thriller genre. If you read only one book this year, this is it. Action, adventure, rebellion, provocative foreign agents, characters you can sink your teeth into. If you’re looking for a new spy thriller series that will stay with you long after you turn the last page, look no further.Recommended for fans of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher, Vince Flynn’s Mitch Rapp, Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne, and Brad Thor’s Scot Harvath.
Slow start but couldn’t put it down after the half-way point. Immediately upon finishing it, I wanted to read the followup book — The Fixer. Normally, I don’t like books that end with a tease to read the next one to continue with the plot but for this one, I will make an exception.
The Splinter is a decent thriller story, but it seems the author didn’t know what to do with Valentina Brik—how to resolve her internal dilemma while dealing with the externals of the story. The last 10-15% of the story also seemed to have been a rushed finish as evidenced by the numerous mistakes that proofreading missed. But, in 8 months we’ll get to see what Lance and Klara run into. Until then, “Saul Better Call” proofreader central in order to clean up errors.
I started reading these a few month back and pre ordered book 5. Read it as soon as it came out and pre ordered book 6. It really keeps you engaged and wanting to know what happens next. I will say that the editing on this one (kindle version) was not done as well as the previous books. There were many typos and wrong words which interrupts my thought process while reading.
I enjoy this series every much but this installment had enough typos to be mildly annoying, which is why only 4 stars. It needs a good scrub by a tech editor.
The Lance Spector books are great fun, and Mr. Herzog has a very engaging writing style. They’re hard to put down, and I look forward to the next one.
Having read the entire Lance Spector series, I find each book better and better so please read the first book first to really understand what’s going on. Herzog must have a crystal ball because he wrote this book and published it so close to the Ukraine-Russia war. I was holding my breath many times while reading this tense, fast paced thriller! My kind of thriller!! My only suggestion is to get a competent editor asap.
