A father and daughter living in the remote Appalachian mountains must reckon with the ghosts of their past in Kimi Cunningham Grant’s These Silent Woods, a mesmerizing novel of suspense. No electricity, no family, no connection to the outside world. For eight years, Cooper and his young daughter, Finch, have lived in isolation in a remote cabin in the northern Appalachian woods. And that’s exactly the way Cooper wants it, because he’s got a lot to hide. Finch has been raised on the books filling the cabin’s shelves and the beautiful but brutal code of life in the wilderness. But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her—and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there. The only people who know they exist are a mysterious local hermit named Scotland, and Cooper’s old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. But this year, Jake doesn’t show up, setting off an irreversible chain of events that reveals just how precarious their situation really is. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurred—and when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finch’s growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. After a shocking disappearance threatens to upend the only life Finch has ever known, Cooper is forced to decide whether to keep hiding—or finally face the sins of his past.Vividly atmospheric and masterfully tense, These Silent Woods is a poignant story of survival, sacrifice, and how far a father will go when faced with losing it all.
I was able to get a sneak peek from Minotaur Books and from the little I read, I knew I had to read the full story. It’s typically not the type of book I read but I was intrigued as to why Cooper and his daughter Finch have lived in isolation in the mountains for so many years. Aside from their nearest neighbor Scotland, they have very little contact from the real world. They look forward to his buddy Jake’s annual visit in which he brings foods and supplies, and when he doesn’t show up Cooper must figure out how they are going to survive as well as stay hidden. As Finch’s curiosity about the outside world increases and she begins asking more questions, Cooper realizes that they are not as secluded and hidden as he thought. I thought this was an interesting and intriguing book and enjoyed reading it. It pulls you into the story as you get to know the few characters in depth. A really good read and I look forward to reading more from this author. Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books for the opportunity to read this book.

Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin’s Press and Minotaur Books for the ARC in exchange for my honest review. I love stories about family and survival, so when I read the synopsis for this book, I was already hooked. To say that I was completely engrossed in this book from beginning to end is an understatement. The character development was fantastic and I became attached to Cooper and Finch. I rarely cry or become emotional when reading books, but this one tugged at my heartstrings like no other book I’ve read, perhaps because I’m a mother and I could put myself in Cooper’s place and contemplate what I would have done if faced with his same situations. I really felt for Cooper and Finch in terms of all of the loss they have endured and what they have overcome to remain together as a family, even if it’s not ideal. They make the best of what they do have, but Finch yearns for more than what’s within these silent woods, which forces Cooper to come to terms with the mistakes he’s made in his past and secrets to be revealed.
These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant is a thriller novel. This one starts off right away with an animal death that almost had me tossing it to the side so that brings me to a trigger warning for not only for that but PTSD, mental health, kidnapping. Cooper, an ex-soldier, has lived off grid with his young daughter, Finch, for the last eight years in the northern Appalachian woods. Living off the land and out of sight is the way Cooper wants to keep it as he has a past that he’s been hiding from all these years. Cooper and Finch have survived all these years with a little help from one of Cooper’s old friends, Jake. The cabin and land they live on belongs to him and the few supplies they do need were delivered regularly until this last delivery date when Jake didn’t show up. Now Cooper needs a plan to stay hidden without Jake’s help. As I said These Silent Woods got off to a rocky start for me with an opening of an animal death but once past that I then became engaged in the story. I would put this one in a more slow building category as it does unravel the past and the incidents behind this unconventional family of two. For a thriller read though it does get emotional and pull at the heartstrings too which I actually enjoyed but others may not. On top of it all though this one does have the tension and twists that kept me engaged too. I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
I loved this story. Completely not what I expected. Cooper and Finch feel like family and I’ve missed them every day since finishing this book. The setting was beautiful, comfortable and at the same time frightening. The writing was simple yet phenomenal. I was sucked into this story, into this quiet world, and was happy as a clam to see the story calmly unfold around me. The ending had me in tears! Mystery/Suspense readers – this one is a must read. The audiobook narration by Bronson Pinchot was stunning.
I had no idea what to expect from this book. Bought it on nothing more than a suggestion from a friend. I was NOT disappointed!! This is such a well written, heartfelt, gut wrenching, mystery/feel good story!! It has so many elements and I couldn’t stop reading. The ending was so good and I didn’t see it coming. This is one of those books that has you still thinking about it LONG after you have finished it. Great read!!
