NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER The shocking, definitive account of the 2020 election and the first year of the Biden presidency by two New York Times reporters, exposing the deep fissures within both parties as the country approaches a political breaking point. This is the authoritative account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House. From Donald Trump’s assault on the 2020 election and his ongoing campaign of vengeance against his fellow Republicans, to the behind-the-scenes story of Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris as his running mate and his bitter struggles to unite the Democratic Party, this book exposes the degree to which the two-party system has been strained to the point of disintegration. More than at any time in recent history, the long-established traditions and institutions of American politics are under siege as a set of aging political leaders struggle to hold together a changing country. Martin and Burns break news on most every page, drawing on hundreds of interviews and never-before-seen documents and recordings from the highest levels of government. The book asks the vitally important (and disturbing) question: can American democracy, as we know it, ever work again?
Well researched but clearly anti-Trump. Granted our former President behaved outrageously on Jan 6 but our current President Biden is outrageous & fails us almost every day. His many lies would have at least been mentioned in less slanted review.
Shows how political parties rely upon the ignorance of voters and their propensity to believe the lies they are fed. This will not PASS until we vote into office individuals intent on our country and Constitution, not party affiliation.
Hey I love reading about unpublished gossip as much as the next guy but this book makes no attempts to hide its liberal bias including proven lies like the “drink bleach” statement. All the dems are presented as heroes without capes. Trump and his administration are presented as villains and inept. There’s no doubt it is well written but I expect more from NY Times journalists.

What began, in the author’s words as “a richly reported account of what was sure to be a memorable presidential campaign” in late 2019, and what subsequently turned into, in my opinion, THE de-facto work on the 2020 election and the absurdity of the Trump White House following it, NYT journalists turned authors Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns compile an amazing modern history here, highlighted, of course, by the January 6th Capitol attack and the evidence leading into it. And this is, of course, what is just now being exposed to the American public by the on-going Jan 6th Committee Hearings.Authors Martin and Burns additionally go on to cover the onset of Biden’s first term and the struggles he and his team faced with a fiercely partisan Congress, holding only the slimmest of margins in the House (as of this writing 220 Democrats to 209 Republicans) and an even slimmer margin in the Senate (with an even 50 to 50 split.) Nevertheless, he’s initially able to pass major domestic spending legislation, supporting his “Build Back Better” initiative with a multi-trillion dollar spending bill to settle the country from the Trump years and begin to recover from the still raging COVID pandemic. Pushing further, we see Biden still struggling mightily with the extremes in his own party (the hard left lead by NY Representative [D] Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Minnesota Representative [D] Ilhan Omar.) We’re given expert coverage here by our two authors who clearly have depth on these issues and expertise in Washington politics and policies. This book’s importance, however, is that it shows how clearly the Trump administration divided and destroyed this nation and that how far-removed subsequent administrations will be in catching up and recovering from those malignant four years. As stated by the authors, the initial trillions of dollars in domestic spending by the Biden administration initially made only a dent in reversing the Trump era damage…Biden’s agenda for a reconciliation to the initial Build Back Better bill and a massive Infrastructure spending law are met with resistance from not only Republicans but moderate Democrats in his own party. Here we learn the struggles that Biden and the House leadership (read House Speaker Nancy Pelosi) encounter with intransigent Senate Democrats Joe Manchin (D-WVA) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who both appear to be centrist Republicans in disguise. Beating back negotiation after negotiation on numerous bill offerings, it is finally a very watered-down infrastructure law that gets passed, with a weak reconciliation legislation to follow. The authors show how this struggle with this agenda literally weakens Bidens drive and initiative, making him far weaker politically then when he took office only a year earlier. The clear and impressive part of this work, though, is the deep research and exposure of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol building. As stated earlier, much of this evidence/information is being exposed now to the American people, but having been read earlier, it is profligate in the guilt of Trump as the instigator of this event. One instance prior to Jan 6th that literally stands out and points to this mad man’s world view was a period where protests were occurring in Lafayette Park in June, 2020 following the George Floyd killing in Baltimore on May, 25th. He (Trump), unbelievably, asked Senior members of his military staff, gathered around his desk in the Oval Office, to break up these demonstrations, “Can’t you just shoot them? Just shoot them in the legs or something?” And this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of defaming accounts included that show a clear psychopath, when faced with losing his election to Biden, going to insane extremes to hold on to power…the reader will be floored with the evidence of a very dangerous malcontent, in the Oval, holding sway over this country’s future…it boggles my mind that a person like him ever rose to the highest office in our land. And it still baffles me that he garners support to this day…to me this just shows the intellectually maligned and challenged that we still have and have to encounter daily in this country and it is clearly those that refrain us from really moving forward in a positive direction.OK, off of my soapbox, this book, “This Will Not Pass” is an exemplary overview and analysis of the recent occurrences in the Biden presidency…moreover, it provides the necessary and stark evidence that there WAS NOT any election fraud in the 2020 presidential election and that Donald Trump continues to be a dangerous and divisive element in our political world today. I would challenge any reader to come away from this excellent account with any other viewpoint.
Just another Republican hating Trump bashing tirade. Ranks right up there with all the other “ journalists” who have cashed in on their animosity for Trump. Then there’s Biden ……
