Summary

My best friend’s little brother needs a bodyguard. Now I’m the one in danger…I’m a SEAL. Or rather, I was. Retired at the grand old age of thirty-eight, I’m at loose ends. My best friend wants me to join his security team. I’m not sure I’m bodyguard material, but he needs someone to protect his kid brother. How hard can spoiled brat duty be?Somehow, I missed the part where former child star Danny Love went from dorky TV darling to all grown up and disturbingly attractive. All the gossip about his wild ways fails to mention that he’s trying hard to clean up his act. But now he’s got a stalker.Hiding out together in a remote mountain cabin, alone, the temptation keeps building. I’m feeling things I never have before. Secrets I’ve kept even from myself bubble to the surface every time Danny looks my way with those puppy dog eyes.I’m a SEAL. We leap into danger. So why is it so terrifying when that danger comes with the softest pair of lips I’ve ever known? At some point we’re going to have to return to Hollywood and our vastly different lives. Will Danny still want me around when he doesn’t need me for protection? Can I be brave enough to give him a reason to?TOUGH LUCK is book one in a brand-new SEAL bodyguard series. It features an age gap, steamy first times, and all the high heat, big emotions, and found family feels readers expect from this fan-favorite military romance author. Join A-List security for this lower-angst series featuring former SEALs and the celebrity clients who win their hearts. Happy endings and no cliffhangers guaranteed!
I love Annabeth Albert and thrilled to see a new series being released by her. Tough Luck is one of my favorite tropes.Cash is a surly ex-military hero who isn’t sure of his next move. His friend has a security company and asks Cash to watch over his child star step brother, Danny. Danny has been threatened recently but law enforcement doesn’t take him seriously. He’s also out and proud. Things heat up with Danny’s stalker and the two must go into seclusion. The story is so much more as Cash never had that special someone in his life and realizes Danny could be it. The story between the two is sweet while they explore their possible relationship. Unfortunately, Cash fears that the age gap may be too much for this relationship to survive. The author does a good job with the romance as well as the suspense. I found it hard to put down and excited that there is more to come.Review copy provided for a voluntary review.
I adored that Albert asked her readers what they would love next from her and she listened and gave us a combination of ex-military and bodyguard as well as her new navy series. I adored Cash and Danny. Loved the bisexual awakening, and I loved how Danny slowly gained his independence after being sheltered for so long. Adored the romance and heat level.
This was an off chance, almost didn’t happen connection between Cash and Danny. But the stars aligned to where Danny was sober, Cash was out of the service, and Duncan has a request. And we can’t forget Harley’s empty cabin. This is a May/December, rich child star that’s experienced too many things in life, and a retired Navy SEAL with a need to protect. There’s a lot of tropes, including Cash discovering his sexuality at forty. As Danny called it, bucket lists. Well, Cash had them too, he just didn’t know it.I loved Cash’s encouragement and support for Danny. He did so with honestly, trust, and wholehearted acceptance. I also enjoyed the focus on the heartbreak of animal shelters. It takes special souls to work animal rescue. A nice easy going read. Read on Kindle Unlimited. – Dan’s Wife
So I’ll be honest here…I didn’t like this one. I just couldn’t connect with these two characters at all. This is my first time reading this author and I will try not to judge based on this one, but this was rough. The writing was all over the place. Thoughts didn’t seem like they were finished and we jumped from one thing to the next. Not to mention, the suspense in this book was a joke. It was a complete afterthought. There’s all this build-up and then two paragraphs and it’s over…lol. The military aspect didn’t work for me either. Is this about Seals because they are supposed to be these big, bad guys that are tough?? Don’t get me wrong, they are, but Cash did not come across that way. Yes, he had some alpha tendencies, but I just didn’t buy it.I know at this point I will definitely not be finishing this series.

The premise of this book is great. A former child star who’s brother was in the military and is now building a security/bodyguard business, sends Cash, who’s out of the SEAL’s and is at a loss of what he wants to do, to protect Danny from a stalker. While the premise made me pick up the book, I was a bit let down with the lack of action. Other than a couple of creepy scenes dealing with the stalker, there’s no real danger radiating from the situation. The best part of the book is how Danny opens himself up to Cash and is accepted for what others thought were weird or immature. I like how their relationship develops, but the suspense of the stalker petered out without much of a dramatic moment. A good read.
