Under One Roof By Ali Hazelwood
Book/Novel Author: Ali Hazelwood
Book/Novel Title: Under One Roof
A USA Today Bestseller! From the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis comes a new steamy, STEMinist novella… A scientist should never cohabitate with her annoyingly hot nemesis—it leads to combustion. Mara, Sadie, and Hannah are friends first, scientists always. Though their fields of study might take them to different corners of the world, they can all agree on this universal truth: when it comes to love and science, opposites attract and rivals make you burn… As an environmental engineer, Mara knows all about the delicate nature of ecosystems. They require balance. And leaving the thermostat alone. And not stealing someone else’s food. And other rules Liam, her detestable big-oil lawyer of a roommate, knows nothing about. Okay, sure, technically she’s the interloper. Liam was already entrenched in his aunt’s house like some glowering grumpy giant when Mara moved in, with his big muscles and kissable mouth just sitting there on the couch tempting respectable scientists to the dark side…but Helena was her mentor and Mara’s not about to move out and give up her inheritance without a fight. The problem is, living with someone means getting to know them. And the more Mara finds out about Liam, the harder it is to loathe him…and the easier it is to love him. Hazelwood writes from Mara’s point-of-view as she navigates life as an environmental scientist working for the Environmental Protection Agency. Like “The Love Hypothesis,” Mara identifies as demisexual and is a woman in academia that faces hardships in a field that previously favored men in STEM. Hazelwood’s choice to broach topics like workplace inequity in her literary works start conversations that need to be had in order to instill change, which is extremely important. In addition, characters like Mara and Olive are crucial in giving readers hoping to pursue a career in a similar field a role model to look up too.My only issue with this novella is it’s length, because I WANT MORE! Had “Under One Roof” been written as a novel, Mara and Liam’s development from enemies to lovers would not have felt as rushed. Nevertheless, this steminist novella is a fun and spicy read!
Truly enjoyed reading this one! This author has a great way of creating a light-hearted story with heavy elements as well!! Quick read that you won’t want to put down, especially about halfway through to the end. I’d definitely recommend it.
How!? How in the world did this short story just make my entire week?! I loved it! I love how awkward they are and the forced proximity! I love the meddling aunt and the banter! Seriously loved the steam- which I was not expecting at all Can’t wait for the next story!
I loved this book, I wish there was more of a build up to the smutty part, but it was good nonetheless. It was overall well written, and I read the whole thing in one sitting.
The story development was decent for a novella, but that last chapter was just cringe and awkward..The smut in this and TLH makes me feel like people in STEM just doesn’t know how to do the deed according to the author?? Because why is it so awkward and the dialogues in the middle is just
This was my first book from Ali and I don’t think it’ll be my last. I loved the tension between the two characters and the gradual build up. Usually it annoys me when the FMC makes a ton of assumptions but I was annoyed by our leading lady. I found funny, quirky, and sweet. I love Liam. Big, strong, guy of few words but when he speaks it is worth listening too. I took away a star because I felt the ending was a bit abrupt. I also didn’t like the fact that for all Mara’s talking when it came time to tell Liam how she felt about him she really didn’t. We got a true heart confessional from him but not her. Also, what happens with the other side of the bargain? All in all still a good enjoyable tread and I look forward to reading the other novellas from Ali.
